Privacy Policy

Who we are

VoltNav is operated by Paul Cote, based in Quebec, Canada, who is also the person responsible for the protection of personal information under Quebec's Act respecting the protection of personal information in the private sector. For any question about this policy or your personal information, contact privacy@voltnav.app.

Scope

This policy covers both the VoltNav mobile app (iOS and Android) and this website.

What we collect, and why

Location

When you use the map, search for a destination, or start navigation, VoltNav requests your device's location. This is used only to center the map, calculate routes, and provide turn-by-turn directions. In the app, location continues in the background only while you're actively navigating — your device shows a persistent indicator whenever this happens, and it stops as soon as you end navigation. Your location is sent, as coordinates only, to our own self-hosted servers to compute routes, search results, elevation profiles, and applicable local regulations — never to any other party.

Trip history and favorites

In the app, your trip history and any saved Home/Work/recent places are stored only on your device. On this website, saved Home/Work places are stored only in your browser's local storage. None of this is ever uploaded to our servers or seen by us. You can clear it at any time by clearing the app's data or your browser's site data.

Search

When you search for an address, your query is sent to our self-hosted search service to find matching places. It's used only to answer that one request and isn't stored afterward.

Exporting a trip (app only)

If you choose to export a completed trip as a GPX file, the app hands that file to your device's own share feature so you can send it wherever you choose. We never receive or see it.

Cookies (website only)

This website sets one cookie, voltnav_locale, to remember your language preference between visits. It contains nothing beyond that preference and isn't used for tracking.

What we don't do

VoltNav has no user accounts, no passwords, and no payment or subscription system. We don't use analytics, advertising, or crash-reporting tools of any kind, and we never sell or rent your information to anyone.

Who receives your information

The only servers your data is sent to are VoltNav's own, physically located in Quebec, Canada. We don't share your information with any other company for their own purposes. VoltNav's map, search, and font assets are all served directly from our own servers rather than third-party providers, so using the app or website doesn't result in requests to Google, Mapbox, or similar services.

How long we keep it

Data stored on your device (trip history, favorites) stays there until you clear it or remove the app — that's entirely your choice, not something we control. Requests to our servers (a route calculation, a search, a legal-status lookup) are processed and then discarded; we don't keep logs tied to your searches or location.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, or receive a copy of any personal information we hold, and to object to how it's used. Because almost everything VoltNav handles lives only on your own device, most of these rights are already in your control — clearing the app's data or your browser's storage removes it immediately. For anything else, or with any question, contact privacy@voltnav.app.

If you're in Quebec, you may also contact the Commission d'accès à l'information (CAI). If you're in the European Union, you may contact your local data protection authority.

Children's privacy

VoltNav isn't directed at children, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes to this policy

We'll update this page if anything about how VoltNav handles information changes. The "last updated" date above reflects the most recent revision.
